For over 125 years, Berry’s Jewellers has been a cornerstone of luxury retail, and its heritage commercial windows reflect this. When undertaking a major renovation of their prestigious Leeds store, the project required a sensitive but high-performance architectural facelift through replacing their sliding sash windows. The goal was to create an environment that reflected the exceptional quality of the pieces they curate—offering clients a truly luxurious, comfortable, and visually stunning experience.
DHW Joinery was commissioned to manufacture and install 13 bespoke sliding sash windows across multiple floors, including the VIP viewing rooms and main offices. While we often partner with contractors on a supply only basis, this particular project was a full supply-and-fit contract, requiring meticulous coordination with multiple external suppliers, principal contractors, and tradespeople to ensure the store’s renovation stayed on schedule.
High-street retailers cannot afford extended downtime, especially during a major facelift of a 125-year-old luxury store. To minimise disruption on-site, our approach to this retail window replacement project relied heavily on meticulous off-site preparation.
All of the sliding sash windows were manufactured from highly sustainable timber, specified by the architects and local planning authority, and fully finished in our workshop. This included the precision spray application of Teknos paint and the pre-installation of the 24mm glazing units. When our fitting team arrived on Albion Street, the process was streamlined: existing frames were efficiently removed, the new bespoke frames were installed, and the custom external Accoya architraves were seamlessly fitted and sealed. This allowed the principal contractors to proceed with the interior fit-out without delay.
Explore Our WorkWhen working on commercial heritage properties, main contractors and architects constantly face the challenge of satisfying local conservation guidelines while meeting modern energy-efficiency standards and maintaining absolute precision. The specifications for Berry’s Jewellers required a delicate balance: preserving the traditional external facade while delivering a bright, modern interior and high thermal performance. We engineered commercial heritage windows that bridge this gap flawlessly.
To handle the weight of the new double-glazed units without relying on bulky traditional lead weights and boxes, we utilised Soukup Conservation Spiral Springs. This allowed us to maintain the slim, elegant sightlines expected of a period property. To replicate the authentic look of individual glass panes, we incorporated Duplex Bars within the units. The result is a window that looks historically accurate from the street but performs flawlessly.
Our workshop delivered the following technical specifications:
For a luxury brand like Berry’s Jewellers, the store environment is an integral part of the client experience.
Upgrading to bespoke timber frames isn’t just a structural necessity; it is an investment in the brand’s premium positioning. To perfectly match the store’s aesthetic, we applied a bespoke two-tone paint finish: a contemporary ‘Clean White’ for the interior VIP and office spaces, and a striking ‘RAL 7016’ (Anthracite Grey) for the exterior. Paired with elegant Satin Chrome claw fasteners and sash lifts, the windows provide a visually stunning backdrop. Furthermore, the use of Planitherm Total+ glass with warm edge spacers and Argon gas ensures the VIP rooms remain thermally comfortable and acoustically insulated from the busy Leeds high street.
