Draught Proofing Sash Windows

How To Draught-Proof Sash Windows

Are sash windows draught-proof? Do sash windows need trickle ventilation? How can you prevent draughts in traditional or heritage homes? Before we answer these questions, there are a few things you need to know about wooden Sash Windows.

Firstly, for sash windows to operate, they must slide freely on a track driven by various beads and pulleys. So, unlike casement windows, they need movement, so they cannot be completely sealed. Also, old timber windows can have rotten or damaged wood, cracked leaky putty, unbalanced weights and are prone to shrinkage, so they no longer fit their frame. This may explain why homes with old windows are often considered prone to draughts, rattling or allowing the noise from outside to filter through. But with modern manufacturing methods and proper installation, replacement timber windows can overcome all these concerns.

Draught Proof Replacement Windows

To overcome air loss or cold air sneaking through the frames, we use a multi-layered draught-proofing system within every timber sash window we produce. This cushioning seal works between the sashes and frame to nullify vibrations, noise and movement. Perfect for noise reduction, draught prevention and storm-proofing! As a bespoke joinery manufacturer, we custom-fit the frames and sashes to be weather-tight.

Sash Windows And Trickle Vents

Sash windows are naturally ‘trickle ventilated’. You can create natural ventilation by lifting the top sash just a fraction or lowering the bottom. Then warm air can rise, and cool, fresh air, being heavier, is drawn into the room and drops down, pushing more air upwards. Airflow is possible without opening the window, meaning draughty trickle vents are not always required with sash windows. In particular, if you live in a listed property or a conservation area, you are exempt from the Approved Document F trickle vent rule.

Draughtless Trickle Ventilation

People often believe the vents will cause heat loss. But the correct ones will not. The trickle ventilators ensure a healthy, consistent flow of fresh air.
We can discreetly design these within your frame if you require trickle vents due to your building regulations or your architect’s design. We use specially designed trickle vents that prevent heat loss and come with soundproofing as standard. A good manufacturer should have the knowledge and ability to source these. There is even technology that retains the benefits of trickle ventilation without cutting visible, unsightly holes.

Draughtproof Sash Mechanisms & Timbers

Sometimes your problem is the fit or operation of your sash. A problem fixed with new sash cords, parting beads, staff beads, pulley wheel lubrication and rebalancing of your weights to ensure a flawless windows slide. If your issue is mostly window mechanisms, a sash repair could help. But mostly, it is your overall material. Using specially designed hardwoods or Accoya wood means you no longer have to worry about wood damage or shrinkage. Pre-treated, prefinished and properly installed timber sash windows will last you at least half a century. That’s years longer-lasting than UPVC. So you will be draught-free for decades.

Weather-Proof Your Sash-Windows

The top tip we can give you is to avoid being tempted to skimp on draught-proofing your new windows. With rising energy costs and the need to be sustainable, you must pay attention to weather sealing and properly installing your windows. To ensure maximum energy-efficiency windows, they must go through rigorous and detailed manufacturing and installation processes, which take time. But without this level of protection, you will notice the difference.
