Owners of this beautiful rural cottage in Yorkshire faced a common dilemma: how to replace ageing, draughty, and inefficient windows without compromising the home’s character. Situated within a rural area, the project required considered planning to ensure the new joinery respected the local architecture while delivering modern performance.
The original windows were allowing heat to escape, resulting in high energy bills and a cold interior during the winter months. The goal was to achieve a “replica look” that preserved the building’s traditional charm while delivering the thermal performance of 21st-century glazing.
To meet the planning requirements for replacement windows in a conservation area, we designed and handcrafted bespoke traditional casement windows. We utilised high-performance Accoya timber, chosen for its incredible stability and durability.
Our Casement WindowsAesthetic: We had to match the client’s original frames, a sophisticated finish in Farrow & Ball, Pitch Black. These black windows provide a striking, contemporary contrast against the traditional Yorkshire stone masonry.
Hardware: To maintain authenticity, the casements are hung on traditional butt hinges and fitted with period-appropriate stays and fasteners.
Doors: The project included matching replacement patio French doors, creating a seamless flow from the home to the garden, finished in the same deep Pitch Black tone.

For this project, we utilised Accoya wood, which is the gold standard for external joinery and excellent for replacement windows and doors. Why?
Lasts over 50 years: Accoya comes with a 50-year above-ground rot warranty, making this a once-in-a-lifetime investment for the homeowner.
Maintenance-Free: Due to its dimensional stability (it doesn’t swell or shrink significantly), the paint finish lasts much longer than on traditional softwoods, resulting in less repainting and no swelling in damp Yorkshire winters.
Thermal Efficiency: Combined with our new high-spec glazing, the Accoya frames act as a natural insulator, significantly improving the home’s energy efficiency and eliminating draughts.
The transformation is dramatic, yet an updated replication of what was there before. The Pitch Black finish frames the rural views perfectly, while the traditional ironmongery satisfies the conservation requirements. The homeowners now enjoy a warmer, draught-free home with windows and doors that will look pristine for a lifetime.
